“We Refuse! A Forceful History of Black Resistance” with Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson

Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson,

In celebration of Black History Month, Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson travelled to Loyola on February 6, 2025 and delivered a charismatic, moving, and sobering lecture history on Black resistance to white supremacy in the U.S.  The audience of 140 students, faculty, and community members engaged with Dr. Carter Jackson in a lengthy Q & A following her talk in Damen Cinema.

Dr. Carter Jackson is a widely known scholar and the Michael and Denise Kellen ’68 Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Wellesley College. She studies the lived experiences of Black people with a focus on slavery, abolitionism, the Civil War, political violence, Black women’s history, and film. She is the author of the award-winning book, Force and Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence, which won the SHEAR James H. Broussard Best First Book Prize. Carter Jackson's latest book, We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance (Seal Press), examines a radical reframing of the past and present of Black resistance—both nonviolent and violent—to white supremacy.

The program was organized and moderated by Assistant Professor of History Dr. Tikia K. Hamilton.   Co-sponsors included: The Institute for Racial Justice, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Departments of Political Science and Criminal Justice and Criminology.
