2024 Annual Kickoff: Dr. Damon A. Williams
We proudly opened our event with a message from President Mark C. Reed and Provost Douglas W. Woods emphasizing our institutional commitment to this work. Dr. Lauren Schwer also provided a heartfelt moment of intentional pause, reminding us of our call to uphold agere contra: to continue doing the right thing, even when it’s hard.
During his keynote speech, Dr. Damon Williams, a renowned expert in higher education and diversity and the author of Strategic Diversity Leadership, addressed national trends in DEI, shared models for approaching a commitment to DEI in higher education, and encouraged the audience to continue to pursue justice and equity for all Ramblers.
This year, our theme is “Equity in Action,” which emphasizes that advancing this work requires us to row with two oars: the individual oar and the institutional oar. Without both, we risk going in circles. What intentional actions will you take to foster equity for our students, faculty, and staff?
2023 DEI Kickoff: Holocaust Museum Visit
Our 2023 office theme “The Power of You” encourages us to reflect on the roles that we play in fostering inclusive excellence. This kickoff event provided faculty and staff to lean into the Jesuit practice of accompaniment, which calls upon us to be a companion, humanize people and walk with them along their journeys. This opportunity encouraged attendees to better understand, connect with, and support the Jewish community.

2022 DEI Kickoff: Dr. Robert Livingston
Our 2022 office theme “We Belong” signaled our collective efforts to create a sense of belonging for all at Loyola. This kickoff event featured guest speaker Dr. Robert Livingston, who equipped faculty and staff with tools for successfully navigating DEI conversations. This included The PRESS Model: Problem awareness, Root cause analysis, Empathy, Strategy, Sacrifice.
More information and tools can be found in Robert Livingston's book The Conversation: How Seeking and Speaking the Truth About Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations.
