Peter Morey (MM, AAGO) is Campus Minister for Catholic Liturgical Music at Loyola University Chicago. In this role, Morey acts as Director of Music for Madonna della Strada Chapel, leading a student-focused music ministry and performing on the chapel’s magnificent pipe organ (Goulding & Wood, Op. 47, 2008). During term time, the chapel boasts two separate Sunday choirs (Schola Cantorum and The9), as well as third which sings evening prayer in the tradition of Taizé (Vesper Choir).
Prior to arriving at Loyola, Morey was Associate Director of Music & Organist for St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston, IL. There, he performed on the parish’s renowned organ, built by the famed Skinner Organ Company under E.M. Skinner (Op. 327, 1922). Along with the companion non-profit Opus 327 nfp, Morey created and led a new organ scholar program, celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the organ, accompanied the choirs during their residency in Chester Cathedral, UK, and performed countless liturgies, concerts, and organ demonstrations.
A latecomer to the organ, Morey began his studies with Donald Sutherland while pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Oboe at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, which he began at the age of sixteen. In 2021, Morey completed the Master of Music in Sacred Music at East Carolina University. Like his great-grandmother, Hazel Morey, he holds the Associate certification from the American Guild of Organists.
Other experiences have included serving as Organ Scholar for the Royal School of Church Music course in Charlotte, NC; an Organist-Choirmaster Fellowship at Christ Church, Raleigh NC; three years as the Cathee Jean Huber Organ Scholar at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, NC; and was one of the Organ Historical Society’s E. Power Biggs Scholars. His major teachers and mentors have included Andrew Scanlon, David Jernigan, Jane Marvine, Douglas Buchanan, Leslie Starr, and Mark Wilson.
Peter’s favorite things include a really good Banh Mi, his cat Dorabella, Sarum blue, the music of Gerald Finzi, roadside attractions, and enabling students to learn and grow through music and liturgy.
