Nomination Criteria
Some of the awards listed on this website have nomination and selection processes that are coordinated internally by departments or divisions. The awards and honors at the bottom of this page involve nomination processes that are open to students, staff, and/or faculty. Please click on each award name to read the selection criteria carefully to ensure eligible nominees are recognized.

The following awards share the same online nomination system, although they have different nomination criteria and deadlines. Loyola students, staff, and faculty can log into the online nomination system using their LUC username and password. You can only nominate a student one time, but you are able to nominate them for more than one award at that time by clicking multiple award options. Please only nominate a student for an award if you feel they are qualified for it; each award has different criteria and requires a different nomination statement. The nomination processes for the following awards will open by January 13, 2025.
- Damen Awards - nominations due by Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 11:00pm Central Time.
- Maroon & Gold Society - nominations due by Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 11:00pm Central Time.
- Diversity Awards - nominations due by Saturday, March 1, 2025
- Graduate, Professional, and Adult (GPA) Student Awards - nominations due by Saturday, March 1, 2025
Damen Student Award
Please use the online nomination system for nominations by Sunday, February 9 at 11:00pm Central Time.
Nominees will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Involvement and leadership in on-campus activities, programs, or organizations
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a sense of institutional pride and communty building
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to enacting Loyola's Catholic, Jesuit mission and values
- Academic excellence
In addition:
- Currently enrolled undergraduate students are eligible.
- No nominee may receive this award for two consecutive years.
- If a rising senior student is selected to be inducted into the Maroon & Gold Society, they will not be considered for a Damen Student Award in that same year in which they are inducted (no student will be recognized with both honors in the same semester).
- A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate a student. Self-nominations are not permitted.
- A maximum of ten awards will be presented each year.
- Nominee must be in the process of completing at least two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September of the next academic year.
- Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above.
- Nominees screened by Office of the Dean of Students.
- VP of Student Development/DSD staff screen nominee list.
Diversity Awards

Note: For all of the Diversity awards, the following apply:
- Only a single award is presented each year.
- Selected by Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) Selection Committee.
Center for Diversity & Inclusion Transformative Educator Award:
- Any faculty member is eligible. UNIV 101 Instructors are not eligible.
- Nominee must have worked at Loyola University Chicago for at least two semesters, or the equivalent, as of January 2024.
- \Previous award winners are not eligible for nomination.
- Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, or administrators.
- Human Resources screens the nominee list for approval.
Center for Diversity & Inclusion Lifelong Commitment to Justice Award:
- Any full-time or part-time staff member is eligible.
- Previous award winners are not eligible for nomination.
- Nominee must have worked at Loyola University Chicago for at least twelve months as of January 1, 2024.
- Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
- Human Resources screens the nominee list for approval.
Center for Diversity & Inclusion Emerging Leader Award:
- Nominee must be a current first- or second-year student [someone who will have completed less than 60 credits at Loyola University Chicago, as of the time of nominations for this award].
- Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2024.
- Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
- A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate nominee.
Center for Diversity & Inclusion Social Justice in Action Award:
- Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2024.
- Nominee must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
- Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
- Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
Center for Diversity & Inclusion Community and Solidarity Award:
- This award recognizes an active registered or sponsored student organization that has shown exemplary commitment to the university community and has made great effort to provide underrepresented students with a supplemental source of support. This organization is a role model for any group working with and serving underrepresented students.
- Any currently registered or sponsored student organization including graduate and professional student organizations
- Nominated by faculty, staff, students, or administrators.
- Limited to one organization. Previous award winners are not eligible.
- Self-nominations are prohibited.
Center for Diversity & Inclusion Father Arrupe Award:
- Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago as a graduate student and anticipate completing a minimum of fifteen credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2024.
- Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
- Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
Graduate, Professional, & Adult Student Awards

Outstanding GPA Student Leader Award Criteria:
- This Award recognizes a Graduate, Professional or Adult (SCPS) [GPA] student that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in a student organization or department. They have transcended the duties of their role and embodied the principals of Magis.
- Any currently enrolled Graduate, Professional, or Adult (SCPS) student is eligible.
- No nominee may receive this award for two consecutive years.
- A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate nominee.
- Self-nominations are prohibited.
- One award will be presented each year.
- Nominee must have completed one semester in good academic standing at Loyola University Chicago by January of the current academic year.
- Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
- Nominees screened by Office of the Dean of Students.
- The Graduate, Professional and Adult Student Council selection committee will select the recipient.
Outstanding GPA Student Organization Award Criteria:
- Any student organization with a majority of Graduate, Professional, or Adult (SCPS) students is eligible. Including sponsored student organizations.
- A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate the organization.
- Self-nominations are allowed.
- One award will be presented each year.
- Student organization advisors will be consulted.
Outstanding GPA Program of the Year:
- This award recognizes and group or student organization that has produced an outstanding program/event/lecture that made a significant contribution to the Loyola University Chicago community.
- Any student organization or group with a majority of Graduate, Professional, or Adult (SCPS) students is eligible. Including sponsored and ad hoc student organizations.
- The program may be a conference, summit, lecture, or social event.
- A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate the organization.
- Self-nominations are allowed.
- One award will be presented each year.
- Student organization advisors will be consulted.
Maroon and Gold Society Membership
Please use the online nomination system for nominations by Sunday, February 9 at 11:00pm Central Time.
Nominees will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Involvement and leadership in on-campus activities, programs, or organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to service within the Loyola community and/or broader community
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to social justice
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to enacting Loyola's Catholic, Jesuit mission and values
- Academic excellence
In addition:
- Nominee must be a rising undergraduate senior
- Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, and/or students. Self-nominations are not permitted.
- No more than 25 members may be selected in a given year.
- Nominee must have completed two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and completed a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September of the following academic year.
- Nominee must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
- Rising seniors eligible whether graduating before, in, or after May in the following academic year.
- Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
- Nominees screened by Office of the Dean of Students.
- Intentional selection of diverse cohort
- List must be approved by VP of Student Development.
Spirit of Laudato si’ Sustainability Awards
Sustainability in Service – This recognition rewards students for their efforts to implement sustainability on campus or in community.
Sustainability in Learning – This recognition rewards students for their efforts incorporating sustainability into their academic experience through research, publication, or coursework advancing sustainability knowledge.
Criteria
- Open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student
- Must be in good standing with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above
- Self-nomination is allowed
Loyola’s Office of Sustainability will review applicants with the University’s Sustainability Committee and Student Development based on the following;
- Clear consideration of social, economic and environmental issues,
- Connection to social-justice motivation for action,
- Measurable values-driven impact, and
- Local and global awareness.
Awards will be presented to an undergraduate AND a graduate student in each category if appropriate nominees are available.

Student Employment Awards
A separate nomination must be submitted for each nominee for the individual awards. Employers will receive information by email to nominate student employees. Contact Career Services with questions.
Award Categories
Arrupe Person for Others Award: This award goes to a student employee who clearly serve others with a passion.
Cura Apostolica - Person for Institution Award: This award goes to a student employee who has demonstrated considerable care in their work tasks, commitment and attitude in promoting, developing and supporting the organization or institution where they are employed. One recipient is recognized for work on campus; the other, for work away from Loyola.
Ignatian Spirit Team of the Year Award: The Ignatian Spirit Award is given to the team or staff of employees who work with passion and dedication as if they live each day to “go forth and set the world on fire.”
Student Employee of the Year: This award goes to one student employee to recognize their outstanding contributions, achievements, and who has made a positive impact on the university.
Student Employee Supervisor of the Year (new in 2025): This award honors the supervisor who exemplifies mentoring, professionalism, leadership, and commitment to developing our student employees.
Student Organization Awards
The Student Organization Awards honor and celebrate the accomplishments of our Recognized and Sponsored Student Organizations. Our student leaders work tirelessly to plan and implement a wide range of programs over the course of the academic year. The spring award ceremony will be by invitation only to privately honor our student leaders. If you have questions, please review this website and / or contact activities@luc.edu.
Sorority & Fraternity Life Awards
The Sorority & Fraternity Life Awards recognize and celebrate the accomplishments/work of our organizations within and outside of Loyola University Chicago throughout the past year. There are two categories of nominations which are Individual Member awards and Organizational Council/Chapter award.
