This is a clinical elective.

Description:

The goal of this elective is to extend knowledge the student has learned as an M3 during his or her pediatric clinical rotation and also to begin learning how to be an effective clinical educator. The specific roles will include being a mentor to junior team members, presenting topical reviews of the current state of knowledge in areas relevant to patients on service, as well as presenting new research or conducting mini journal clubs.  Students will be expected to be a part of the inpatient pediatrics team (assigned to either team A or team B) and will be present for handoff at 6am.  The student will assist the M3 students in seeing their patients and performing a pediatric history and physical. They will also assist the M3 students with following up with patients in the afternoons. M4 student will help navigate the electronic medical record and helping them prepare their notes and presentations for rounds. M4 student is expected to both prepare articles or short presentations on relevant topics for table rounds or small teaching sessions in the afternoon as well as help M3 students find articles pertinent to the patient’s they are carrying. The M4 student will also attend morning report/educational conferences, attending rounds, as well as hematology/oncology rounds at 1pm. The student will not be expected to come in on the weekends. If census allows it, M4 should carry 1 patient each day for teaching purposes. They will present on this patient during table rounds, talk to the patient/family during walk rounds, and demonstrate physical exam skills later in the day with the goal of being an example for the M3 students to emulate. M4 will also be given a short required reading list with topics regarding medical education to complete during their time on this elective. Lastly, M4 student is expected to be giving M3 students feedback throughout their time on this elective.

SCHEDULE:
During the months of May through October, student will be on an inpatient team for 2 weeks at a time and will not be expected to work weekends, working a total of 10 days. Only 1 student may sign up for the elective during these months.

During interview season, the months of November & December, this elective will be held over a 4 week period but only count for 2 weeks of elective credit. 2 students will be allowed to sign up for the elective during these months and it will be up to the two students to work out a schedule where both students work a total of 10 days during the month. Again, during this time weekends are not expected. A schedule should be given to the supervising physician on bi-weekly basis so they know who to expect on which days.

Stritch School of Medicine Medical Competencies
1) Medical Knowledge
Medical knowledge will be both learned and taught during this elective.  This will be achieved through not only mentoring/teaching the M3 students and teaching the team with mini-topic presentations, but also through being an active member of the team, reading about the patients and helping to provide care to them.

2) Patient Care
The student will provide patient care through both direct interactions as well as by mentoring the M3 students through a focused pediatric history and physical exam.

3) Interpersonal and Communication Skills
Much of being a great doctor is being an effective teacher and communicator.  This elective will empower the M4 student to nurture his/her communication skills both to patients, and to other members of the team through teaching and mentorship.

4) Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
The student will attend all morning report sessions, as well as conduct topic presentations to help the team learn and improve upon topics in pediatric medicine.

5) Professionalism
The student will be expected to be on time, dress professionally, and interact with all members of the team and ancillary staff in a professional manner.  The student will demonstrate respect and honesty in all of their interactions with patients and team members.

6) Systems Based Practice
The student will further their experience with effectively engaging resources to optimize the delivery of care to various patients and populations, as well as consider cost-effectiveness and risk-benefit analysis in providing care.

7) Inter-professional Collaboration
The student will be expected to interact with consult services, nurses, and other ancillary staff in order to effectively provide care for each of the patients on the service.

8) Personal and Professional Development
The student will learn lifelong teaching and mentoring skills that will enable them to become an effective teacher, communicator, mentor, and team member for when they become a resident / attending.

Method of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the basis of each of the core objectives.  By the end of the rotation students should feel more comfortable in the role of “teacher” when on the floor, to prepare them for residency and a career in academic medicine.  The student should also be an active member of the team and help with all aspects of patient care. The grading will be pass/fail with a passing grade demonstrating competencies in mentorship of the M3 students, topic presentations to the team, observed M3 student feedback, and overall clinical performance. The course directors will provide mid elective feedback and will also determine the final grade based on observed teaching performance and feedback from junior students.
