Prerequisite: Completion of Pediatrics clerkship.
Special Note:

All interested students are required to write a letter of intent, stating their interest in the elective (and their interest in Loyola, for visiting students). This will be reviewed by the Elective Director. After review of letter by the Elective Director, students will be notified of approval/denial of rotation. Description:

This elective is designed for the student interested in Critical Care Medicine. Students will be caring for critically ill neonatal patients in our state-of-the-art 50 bed intensive care unit. With over 500 admissions yearly, students will be exposed to a wide variety of pathology. He/she will learn fluid and electrolyte management, antibiotic therapy, resuscitation, blood gas interpretation, and manage ventilators. Students will attend high risk deliveries. Students will learn a variety of procedures such as: 1. Lumbar punctures, 2. Arterial punctures, 3. Insertion of umbilical catheters, 4. Chest tube placement, and 5. Intubation.

Didactic lectures, case management conference, journal club and joint neonatal-perinatal conference are held weekly and students are encouraged to actively participate. We encourage night call every fourth to fifth night and let the students make their own schedule.

Method of Evaluation: Evaluation of history and physical exams, presentations during rounds, knowledge of physiology, evidence of reading assigned material and evidence of independent reading about patients cared for during the elective.
