Students wishing to take this elective during M3 year are required to write a letter of intent, stating your interest in the elective. This will be reviewed by the Elective Director. After review of letter by the Elective Director, students will be notified of approval/denial of rotation. Please email letter to department contact listed.

Students are required to prepare an oral presentation on a cardiology topic at the end of the session.

Elective is Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm.

Clinic sites include Maywood, Oakbrook, Burr Ridge, Park Ridge.  

This is a unique experience for students who wish to "tune-up" their clinical cardiac skills. The course includes all pediatric patients with dysrhythmias, congenital/acquired heart disease. Their ages range from newborns to adulthood. Patients are seen/consulted in the newborn nursery, neonatal intensive care units, the pediatric intensive care units, and pediatric floor. Outpatients are evaluated two mornings a week. Students are expected to follow all inpatients, including post-operative cardiac surgery cases. Students may attend pediatric electrophysiology ablation cases when available. Clinical responsibilities are in keeping with student level of experience.

ECG and echocardiography reading sessions are available.

Students are expected to participate in daily rounds.

At the end of the four-week session, students are asked to organize a 10-15 minute oral presentation on a cardiac-related topic of their choice.

Outlines are given out at the beginning of the clerkship and cardiac reading list is available. This is an outpatient, inpatient, non-invasive, and invasive laboratory experience.
