Course Title: Neuromuscular Elective
No. of Students: 1

Supervisor: David Kvarnberg, MD
Duration: 4.0 weeks
Periods Offered: Year round
Prerequisite: Fourth year standing.
Special Note: This elective is available only to Loyola Stritch students.
Description: The goal of this course is to develop basic knowledge of neuromuscular medicine, so that the student can identify neuromuscular patients clinically, know the indications/limitations of diagnostic testing, and learn management principles of neuromuscular patients. The course will consist of Neuromuscular clinics, EMG lab, and formal one-on-one didactics of the primary areas of neuromuscular medicine. There are assigned readings from critical papers in the literature to supplement learning. The student will be expected to see patients in the clinic independently, and will be supervised by a neuromuscular attending. The student will also learn theory and interpretation of EMG studies through direct observation, and will be expected to interpret data of basic EMGs of typical cases.
Method of Evaluation:

Calculation of Final Elective Grade:
50% of the grade will come from a 30-question multiple choice exam and 50% of the grade will be from Student Summative Evaluations, which will be based on medical knowledge, communication skills, efficiency of history taking and demonstration of neurology exam skills. A brief presentation is encouraged but not required.
