Dr. Kristopaitis will email students with information regarding the elective the week prior to their start date.

On the first day of the elective, page LUMC Palliative Care Consult at 8:15am.

Elective is Monday-Friday.

The Loyola Palliative Care elective provides the opportunity for students to participate in the care of patients with serious illness. Students will develop symptom management skills, such as palliating pain, nausea/vomiting, and anorexia, necessary to provide quality care for patients. Equally important, students will learn communication skills to engage patients and their families during difficult conversations and situations. Students will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the daily practices of an interdisciplinary palliative care team. These points of contact include palliative care consults, family meetings and conversations with patients regarding goals of care.

Students will be expected to engage in consult service activities Monday through Friday.

Loyola's Palliative Care-Based Curriculum and modules developed by the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) serve as formal didactic material.

Students will develop a 5-10 minute presentation on a topic of their choice in the realm of palliative care which they will present to the members of the palliative care team.

Students will be evaluated based on their active presence during palliative care consult team activities; discussion of cases and evidence of reading on palliative care topics; completion of assigned educational modules; submission of a reflection, and presentation of their topic.

This course is graded Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail.
