| Description: |
This elective involves a comprehensive overview of sports medicine under the direct supervision of one or more family medicine physicians in an outpatient setting. The student will evaluate patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic medical issues and be prepared to diagnose and manage common sports related issues in the family medicine setting. This course consists of a combination of Sports Injury Clinic and traditional family medicine, as well as collegiate and high school training room clinics. Additional time may be available at various rehabilitation centers and orthopaedic offices in the area and at Loyola. The student will see patients (traditional and sports medicine) in the Loyola Center for Health-Maywood Family Medicine, Loyola Outpatient Center-Musculoskeletal Care Clinic, Westmont Junior High School, Trinity High School in River Forest, and Loyola University Lake Shore Campus in Chicago, IL. Additional requirements include:· Participation in medical coverage of athletic events appropriate to the season (may occur at night or on weekends). · Participation in weekly Sports Medicine lectures. · Presentation of Sports Medicine topics during selected meetings. · Informal case presentations to physicians, trainers and students. · Students will be spending approximately 40 hours/week in the outpatient clinics, described above, and one day per week in surgery · Students will also be required to attend selected games and events for the high schools, university, and community. These games most commonly occur on Friday evenings or Saturdays. |
| Method of Evaluation: | The student will be evaluated based upon their level of participation with their grade being determined by the clinical evaluations of the preceptors. |
