Description:

The purpose of the Medical Polish Student Elective is to provide one week of elective course credit to those students who meet the language skills and cultural competency training of the Medical Polish Program. To achieve elective credit, students will attend 20 hours of peer-led medical Polish classes and either shadow a translator at the LUMC or a fluent attending physician who serves a large Polish patient population. The course will teach students the fundamentals of the Polish language so as to be able to provide a better level of care and communicate with the Polish speaking patient population.
The course will involve learning the basics of the Polish language and will be led by Polish speaking Loyola medical students. Initial lessons will focus on the Polish alphabet and phonetics, subsequently advancing to grammar, syntax and vocabulary necessary to effectively communicate in Polish in the medical setting. All subject matter will be aligned with material being taught in Patient Centered Medicine-1 (PCM-1).

Method of Evaluation:

Language skill component: student progress will be evaluated by a quiz and survey on the first day and last day of course. There will also be an oral examination at the end of the course.
Cultural competency component: Each student will submit a one page reflection on his or her experience shadowing a translator.

GRADING: Pass/Fail only. Passing requires successfully completing all required components of the elective.
