Special Olympics Loyola
Stritch Special Olympics
The purpose of this organization is to integrate medical student wellness with community engagement by providing mentorship and recreational opportunities for students with special needs. This mission will be accomplished through the three club objectives. The first aim of our organization is to provide students with disabilities (i.e. athletes) the opportunity to participate in recreational sports regardless of their condition. We will pair medical students with respective athletes such that they can learn from each other and compete in local, regional, and state-wide athletic competitions. Our second aim is to provide medical students with the opportunity to practice physician wellness through sports-medicine community activism. We will provide complementary physicals for athletes that are struggling to obtain them; these health exams are necessary for athlete participation in Special Olympics activities. Our final aim is to volunteer at fundraisers for Special Olympics (such as their Polar Plunge) to ensure that low-income students experiencing disabilities continue having equal access to Special Olympics activities. The goal of our organization is to educate more cognizant physicians while building connections with community members in need.
