New Life Volunteering Society (NLVS)

New Life Volunteering Society

The New Life Volunteering Society (NLVS) is a national, non-profit service organization with chapters at all six of Greater Chicagoland's medical schools, including Loyola University Chicago, University of Illinois Chicago, Northwestern University, Rosalind Franklin University, Rush University, and the University of Chicago. In 2003, NLVS opened the first-ever student-run free clinic in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, where the population lives 200% below the poverty line.

Currently, students from all medical schools are provided with an equal opportunity to engage in collaborative service of the uninsured community. We provide primary prevention and secondary management of acute and chronic medical conditions and also serve to train future healthcare professionals by providing an educational setting to learn and practice clinical skills. Every Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, volunteer attending physicians oversee teams of medical students from every school and every grade in providing basic care to our walk-in patients, many of whom have used NLVS as their sole primary care provider for years.

In addition, the NLVS Stritch chapter organizes community service events, engages in patient health education, recruits physicians to attend the clinic, raises money through fundraising events, and increases publicity in the neighborhood to make patients, physicians, and students aware of the organization and its mission.
