What is your favorite thing about working at Loyola?
I think my favorite thing about working for Loyola is the kindness, courtesy, and respect the faculty, staff, and students demonstrate to their Loyola family on a daily basis. Coming from a totally different environment, I am amazed at how wonderful it is to work at a place like Loyola.
What is your most memorable achievement as a Loyola employee?
I am not sure if I can single out one memorable achievement as a Loyola employee, but there were several times when I was in a position to help a Loyola student, faculty, or staff member in a time of need. A few years ago, a student called Campus Safety when an offender tried to steal her computer. She gave a great description and I grabbed him as he was walking out of Lewis Library. He was a career criminal, on parole, who went back to jail for two years. Last summer, we were having problems with flash mobs near the Water Tower Campus. Four of our students were leaving the local McDonald’s when they were confronted by one of the disruptive groups. I, along with two other members of Campus Safety, interceded and escorted the students back to Baumhart Hall. It's things like that that really make you feel good!
What does Loyola's mission mean to you?
To me, Loyola's mission means treating all of our Loyola family, as well as the entire community, with dignity, respect, and tolerance while working within our diverse community.
What motivates you to succeed each and every day?
My motivation to succeed every day at Loyola moves me to try and help everybody in any way that I can. I want to be seen as approachable and available to anyone who might possibly be in need of assistance.
Tell us how you show your Rambler pride.
When I wear my Campus Safety uniform I would like to think I represent all of Loyola. I try and smile and speak to as many people as possible when I am on patrols. That, I think, demonstrates my Rambler pride!
Tell us something most people at Loyola would be surprised to know about you.
Some people don't know that I studied to be a priest for a couple of years. I was with the Augustinians at a seminary located in Holland, Michigan before I realized that I wanted to be a police officer. Shortly after my seminary days, I was hired as a police officer for the small village of Hodgkins, Illinois in 1973. In 1977 I was hired by the Chicago Police Department and remained there for 28 years. This August I will have been with Campus Safety for 10 years and in my 41st year in law enforcement. And, I’m still learning something new every day. It has been said, "Enjoy what you do for a living and you will never work a day in your life," and to me no truer words were ever spoken.
