What is your favorite thing about working at Loyola?
The people—Loyola hires great folks. I’ve never had a job where so many of my coworkers move into the “Friend: For Serious” category.
What is your most memorable achievement as a Loyola employee?
I started working at Loyola in the fall of 1997. I was a library student worker in the Sullivan Center. I grew up on that job—I learned how to manage a budget, balance school and work, and negotiate all kinds of personal and professional relationships. My supervisor at the time, Brenda Overton, took fresh-faced kids under her wing and nurtured us into well-rounded adults. I owe so much of what I’ve become to Brenda, and I can’t underestimate the value that student worker positions have here at Loyola.
What motivates you to succeed each and every day?
I think it is more ancestry than motivation, but the Germans have a saying: "wenn schon, denn schon," meaning “if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.” My grandfather’s favorite quote growing up was, “If a task has once begun, never leave it till it's done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.” My grandpa passed away when I was small but his legacy is larger than life. I’ve always remembered that quote and tried to make him proud.
Tell us how you show your Rambler pride.
I wear a Loyola three-piece suit most weekends—Loyola t-shirt, sweatshirt, and sweatpants. I propose an Instagram hashtag sweeping campus…#Loyola3piecesuit
Tell us something most people at Loyola would be surprised to know about you.
I love Kenny G and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I play Kenny G in the mornings before my coworkers arrive and I feel centered. Kenny is the real Breakfast of Champions.
