Smita Gosain
A Commitment to Education
Smita Gosain has always valued education, a commitment that stems from growing up in a family deeply rooted in science, with a doctor for a mother and a scientist for a father. Initially pursuing a career in molecular biology, Smita later shifted her focus, completing a law degree three decades ago, chose to raise her family over a prestigious position, and later also completed an MBA. Her decision to enroll in SCPS’s paralegal program was both a way to update her legal skills and reacquaint herself with technological advancements in the field, helping bridge her academic past with today’s practical needs.
Throughout her time at SCPS, Smita recalls facing challenges, particularly during her exams in computer applications and legal research, which tested her speed and adaptability. She found herself thriving in a learning environment that encouraged students to navigate rigorous academic waters that was instrumental in building her confidence and reinforcing her capability to succeed.
Smita’s experience in the paralegal program has been fulfilling on multiple levels. She values the practical, project-based learning that gave her a tangible sense of accomplishment. The flexibility of the program, tailored for adult learners, was especially beneficial for her, allowing her to balance her education with family commitments. Smita sees the Institute for Paralegal Studies at SCPS as an ideal steppingstone for anyone considering a future in law as it provides a solid foundation without the financial and time investments of law school.
"I think if you do the paralegal program first and then go to law school, it gives you a huge advantage. If you're working in a law firm and taking these classes in the evening, you are setting yourself up for big success in law school. If you don't know if you want to go to law school, this is also a good way to take a taste."
In addition to her studies, Smita serves as an SCPS ambassador, a role that allows her to give back by sharing her diverse career experiences with younger students. As someone who mentors younger people, she finds joy in advising others on their career and educational paths. Smita aspires to continue using her unique blend of scientific, legal, business, and now paralegal knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the workforce while supporting new students.
"There is a lot of flexibility built in the program for adult learners. I have a family that's grown, and we all have to coordinate our schedules to get together, so the flexibility was very helpful. You can manage it in your own way."
