Safety on Campus

Loyola University Chicago and the Department of Residence Life are committed to providing a safe educational environment for all students. Creating a safe environment is accomplished through strong partnerships between the University, students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community.

Some of the safety systems currently in place are:

• Campus Escorts
• Effective Campus Lighting
• Campus Safety Patrols
• Published Safety Information and Emergency Procedures
• LoyolaAlert System (REGISTER NOW)
• Multiple Security Posts
• Emergency 'Blue Light' Phones throughout Campus
• ID Card Controlled access at residence hall entrances
• Building and Area Front Desks staffed 24/7
• Security Cameras in some halls and throughout campus
• Door Viewers (peep holes) on all residence hall apartment/room doors

The effectiveness of all systems depends on student cooperation.
To help maintain safety on campus, please consider the following:

• Do not prop open entrance doors, stairwell doors, or other secured doors
• Do not allow anyone you do not recognize you to follow you through secured doors/gates
• Keep the door to your room locked
• Do not allow access to buildings by non-residents unless they are your guest
• Properly register and escort your guests
• Watch out for your friends and help them practice safe habits
• Report suspicious persons, packages, or behaviors found in buildings or on campus to Campus Safety (773) 508-7233 or 44-911 from campus phone
• Do not tamper with security cameras, fire alarms, or other safety equipment
• Take part in fire drills and identify at least 2 ways to exit your room/building
• Never give your key(s) or ID card to another person
• If you see something, say something

Random crimes are difficult to prevent, but you can take steps to reduce crimes of opportunity and remain safe:

• Stay alert at all times and tuned in to the surroundings; wearing headphones while walking or jogging may limit your awareness and also shows you may be carrying a valuable item
• Plan routes in advance; vary those routes when possible
• Get to know the neighborhoods where you live and work; find out what stores and restaurants are open at the times you're out and where police and fire stations are located
• When walking or jogging, use busy streets, and avoid shortcuts through deserted parks, vacant lots, and unlit passages
• At night, walk or jog only on streets with plenty of light and traffic, and avoid walking alone if possible
• Walk on the part of the sidewalk close to the street and away from shrubbery, trees or doorways
• Stand and walk confidently
• Trust your instincts: get help right away if a situation or place is uncomfortable
• Don't carry large sums of cash or display cash in public
• If possible, carry only identification, phone numbers and the credit cards you need and keep a list at home of credit cards and other important material you would need to replace in case of loss
• Keep house keys and car keys on separate key rings; if you carry a purse, consider carrying your keys somewhere other than your purse
• Keep names and phone numbers of relatives or friends handy in the event of an accident or emergency; if your phone offers the ability to do so, program an emergency contact
