About
Currently, Dr. Byas is the leader of the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) Innovation Hub for The Center for Health Affairs, Cleveland, where Dr. Byas is implementing an innovative cloud computing platform provided by Amazon Web Services that is addressing disparities tied to gun violence, behavioral health, access to health care, housing insecurity, and other SDoH issues. Through various leadership roles, Dr. Byas promoted health equity, addressed health disparities correlated to social determinants of health (SDOH), and supported social justice while achieving some of the following milestones:
- Founding member and past president of the Asian Health Care Leaders Association that is now a community within the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
- Interim CEO for the Institute for Diversity. Helped form the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives and the ACHE LGBTQ Healthcare Leaders Community.
- Raised over $1 M for research and programs to reduce infant mortality in Illinois.
- Consultant to the Federal Office of Minority Health and the Federal Office of Rural Health.
- Diversity and equity consultant to HCA; and member of the selection committee member on HCA's diversity scholarship program Health disparities and health care leadership consultant to universities
and health systems in the U.S. and Europe.
Currently, Dr. Byas is the Founder and CEO of Leadership Lessons From, Inc., a non-profit focused leadership development and mentoring of health care leaders from underrepresented populations. He also conducts Grounded Theory research on leadership, serves as the program director of the Master of Science (MS) in Organizational Leadership and the MS in Health Care Leadership at Union Institute & University - the latter being a new program model designed by Dr. Byas to foster leadership skills while actually solving SDOH.
Using his interdisciplinary PhD in Ethical and Creative Leadership in< conjunction with his Grounded Theory research on how leaders sustain successful careers, Dr. Byas teaches Healthcare Ethics to MBA students at the Quinlan School of Business, Loyola University Chicago, Social Determinants of Health in the EdD program at Union Institute & University, and Health Policy at Rush University's Master of Healthcare Services Management program. He also conducts master classes and conferences on leadership for various European and U.S. universities, corporations, professional association, and nonprofits organizations.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Byas successfully mentored individuals who, in turn, are CEOs from under-represented populations. More than 20 are now C-suite leaders in health care and other organizations. He lends his leadership and organizational development expertise on various boards of not-for-profit organizations.
While helping to raise three children who are young adults now working and living in Chicago, Dr. Byas received his PhD in Ethical and Creative Leadership from Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, and was granted a Doctor of Humane Letters from Wittenberg University, Springfield, OH. His Master in Public Health is from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the B.A. degree is from Wittenberg University. He is also a Fellow of ACHE (FACHE).
