About
Emily Barman is Dean of the Graduate School, Vice Provost of Graduate Education, and a Professor of Sociology at Loyola University Chicago. Her appointment began in July 2020 and she joined Loyola University Chicago from Boston University, where she served as Associate Dean of the Graduate School for several years. She also has a joint appointment in the Management Department in Loyola's Quinlan School of Business. Emily received a BA in Sociology and History from the University of British Columbia and Master’s and PhD degrees in Sociology from the University of Chicago. As Dean of the Graduate School, Emily is committed to ensuring equity, transparency, and consistency across all graduate programs in the Graduate School, as well as working to implement holistic professional, social, and personal support for all graduate students. As a scholar, Emily studies the social organization of philanthropy and altruism. She has written multiple articles on this topic, published in American Journal of Sociology, Annual Review of Sociology, and Social Forces, among others, as well as publishing several award-winning books, including Caring Capitalism: The Meaning and Measure of Social Value (Cambridge University Press, 2016) and Contesting Communities: The Transformation of Workplace Charity (Stanford University Press, 2006).
