Healthcare Administration Minor

Understand the business side of health care

The Healthcare Administration minor prepares students to work in healthcare settings and to understand the business side of public health and health care. The minor is built upon a foundation of Jesuit-based liberal arts, business, and public policy courses. Students adding the Healthcare Administration minor to their course of study choose from a range of classes related to the health system: healthcare fiscal management, health information technology, health policy, health equity, healthcare data analytics and more. Students will gain: 

  • Basic healthcare literacy
  • Introduction to a wide array of healthcare trends and issues
  • Insights into the operations of the multi-faceted healthcare industry

Curriculum

Two courses (six credit hours) are required and four courses (12 credit hours) are to be selected from the elective course list. The following courses are not open to Healthcare Administration minors: HSM 310, 315, 338, 358, 350 and 360.

REQUIRED COURSES

Must complete required courses (6 credit hours) before enrolling in Group 1 or Group 2 electives. 

  • HSM 110 - Healthcare in America
  • HSM 210 - Introduction to Global Health

ELECTIVE COURSES

Select minimum of one course and up to two courses from Group 1 (three or six credit hours).

  • HSM 220 - Continuum of Healthcare Services
  • HSM 230 - Fundamentals of Health Equity (Pre-reg HCA 110)
  • HSM 240 - Healthcare Workforce Environment (Pre-reg HCA 110)

Select minimum of two courses and up to three courses from Group 2 (6 or 9 credit hours)

  • HSM 325 - Healthcare Fiscal Management (Pre-req HCA 110 and FINC 301)
  • HSM 330 - Healthcare Legal & Regulatory Enviornment (Pre-req HCA 240 and PHIL 284)
  • HSM 340 - Healthcare Policy (Pre-req HCA 110 and HCA 230)
  • HSM 345 - Healthcare Data Analytics (Pre-req ACCT 201 and ISSCM 241 or PSYC 304)
  • HSM 368 Management of Healthcare Organizations (Pre-req HCA 110)
  • HSM 386 - Health Informtaion Management Systems (Pre-req HCA 110)
  • ECON 329 - Health Economics (Pre-req ECON 201)
