Janice MacDonald, M.F.A.

About

Performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player, Chicago native Janice MacDonald has appeared on national and international stages, including Mexico, Ethiopia, Mali and throughout Europe. She is principal flute of the Chicago Sinfonietta, solo piccolo of the Lake Forest Symphony, a member of the Chicago Philharmonic and Joffrey Ballet Orchestra, and has performed with the Grant Park Orchestra, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theater, Concertante di Chicago and Ars Viva.

Other notable performances include the orchestras for the American Ballet Theater, Bolshoi, Royal and San Francisco Ballets, as well as with Music of the Baroque, NEIU's Jewel Box Series, Fulcrum Point New Music Project, the Pilgrim Chamber Players, and as a founding member of the New Music ensemble Pinotage. An advocate of new music, she has premiered and performed works by many composers, including John Adams, Lawrence Axelrod, Kathleen Ginther, Bernard Rands and Randall Woolf. Along with her husband, clarinetist Dileep Gangolli, she is co-director of the South Loop Music Festival in Chicago.

As an active theater and studio musician, Janice has performed in many Broadway in Chicago productions and has recorded numerous radio and television commercials. She can be heard on the Cedille, Jade, Innova, American Gramophone and Albany labels, as well as several PBS Soundstage productions. She has also performed on WFMT's Live from WFMT, Impromptu, and Fiesta broadcasts.

Janice has been a guest artist/clinician at Northwestern University, DePaul University, Cal State Sacramento, Bowling Green University, Columbia College, Southern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Wheaton College, and Roosevelt University. An alumna of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, she holds an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts and a B.M. from DePaul University. Her teachers include Donald Peck, William Bennett, David Shostac and Keith Underwood.
