Mirroring the Saints: The Jesuit Wierix Collection from De Krijtberg in Amsterdam
November 20, 2012 – January 13, 2013
Collections of prints depicting the spiritual fortitude of saints were known as “mirrors” in late medieval and early modern Europe. This exhibition comprises fifty copperplates executed by a famous family of seventeenth-century Flemish printmakers: Anton and Hieronymous Wierix and their brother-in-law, Jan Baptist Barbé. The plates were discovered in the possession of the Amsterdam Jesuits in 2000. New prints that were struck from the old plates will also be on view.
