On June 19, 2014, Loyola University Chicago in collaboration with the City of Chicago Department of Public Health, the Cook County Department of Public Health, and the University of Illinois at Chicago hosted:

A City and Countywide Summit to Advance Healthy Homes & Healthy Communities

Scientists have long recognized that indoor toxic hazards, including dust, pests, mold, lead, and dangerous gases, typically pose far greater risks to children’s and families’ health than outdoor exposures, because of the concentrated levels.

Policy makers, advocates, community representatives, researchers, and health professionals joined together to begin to develop a blueprint for the City and County to advance a healthy homes agenda. This day-long summit included a morning plenary session setting the framework for discussion. The afternoon included strategic planning work group sessions, focusing on: public health and social service interventions; existing and potential regulatory schemes; sustainable solutions for healthy homes; and efforts to raise awareness among decision makers.
