The Maurice Sendak Elementary School opened in 2005. Along with other schools in the district, economic downturns did affect the school in 2010 when layoffs of some teachers were threatened.[1] Today the school serves 700 students, all of whom qualify for subsidized school lunch, a general measure of low-income students.[2] In the 2013-2014 school year, 87 percent of the students at Sendak were Hispanic.[3] A 2010 web post commenting about the school, the writer praises the school: “I love Maurice Sendak El because the brand new buildings come alive with the spirit of hope, laughter, and the love of learning.”[4]
