Over the last several decades there has been an explosion of data in nearly every field imaginable including business, marketing, sports, and scientific fields such as medicine, genetics, and neuroscience. As a result of this deluge of data, the demand for individuals with the skills to manage, analyze, and communicate results based on large amounts of data are as high as they have ever been.

Data Science is a multi-disciplinary field combining techniques from mathematics, computer science, and statistics to organize, analyze, visualize, and extract useful information from data. The field developed in response to the deluge of data present in our daily lives in the 21st century, and the high demand for workers and researchers who understand all parts of the data analysis cycle from managing, storing, and cleaning data, to statistical analysis, machine learning, and big data techniques, and the ability to communicate their results effectively to others.
At Loyola University Chicago, there are many options for you for your Data Science education. At the undergraduate level students can choose to major or minor in Data Science, and at the graduate level students can pursue a Master's Degree (M.S.) in Data Science with an option between thesis track and non-thesis track. In addtion, undergraduate students have the option to pursue a Bachelor's and Master's degree in five total years through the 4+1 program.
Engage in innovative graduate research
Students on the thesis track or who are funded will engage in research while in our MS in Data Science program. Graduates will engage in research with faculty and other graduate students from Data Science and across other disciplines such as applied statistics and computer science. Starting in Fall 2021, we now offer a Master's of Science Degrees in Data Science as well as a 4+1 program for undergraduates looking to do an accelerated master's degree. The M.S. in Data Science can be completed on either the thesis (usually 4 semesters) or non-thesis (usually 3 semesters) track.

At Loyola, our MS in Data Science program provides students with the technical skillset needed to effectively manage, analyze, and communicate key findings from data in a wide range of contexts. We sat down with graduate program director Yasin Silva to learn more about the program:
What makes Loyola’s MS in Data Science program stand out from other programs in the field?
I would summarize it in four key points: we offer supportive faculty; close guidance from the graduate program director; opportunities to work closely with outstanding faculty who are active in data science research; and an interdisciplinary and responsive curriculum that covers the tools students will need in real-world scenarios. We also integrate additional data-oriented courses from other units that may be of particular interest to individual students.
How would you describe the experience and expertise of the faculty in the program?
We have a strong and research-active group of faculty members in our program that regularly teach classes and provide exciting research experiences to our students. Many of our faulty members also engage in active interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues from other areas including the health and social sciences. Our faculty members are funded by various agencies including NSF, NIH, and NSA.
Based on your classroom experience, how are Loyola students different?
While the MSDS program is relatively new, our students come from a wide range of areas including physics, chemistry, journalism, computer science, mathematics, and statistics. They are a very active and talented group that bring diverse perspectives and areas of expertise to our classes and help and encourage each other. Many of them are also involved in our Data Science student club which organizes various talks and study-group sessions.
Upon graduation, what careers or occupations will graduates be prepared for? How does the program ensure that students are exposed to the latest technologies and methodologies in data science?
There are many data-related roles that our graduates can have, including data scientist, machine learning engineer, and data engineer. The faculty in our program do a fantastic job ensuring our classes are always relevant and cover the latest frameworks and tools used in the field. We are also in continuous communication with our students and share their feedback regarding new needed tools with the professors teaching related classes.
