Restorative Justice: Unguarded Viewing and Discussion

We were pleased to host a viewing of Unguarded, a documentary film that tells the story of successful restorative justice work in Brazil and America through the experience of Association for the Protection and Assistance of the Convicted (APAC).

Viewing was followed by a post-film discussion featuring filmmakers Simonetta D'Italia-Wiener and T.J. Berden, along with Robert Ehnow, Director of the Office for Life, Peace and Justice, Diocese of San Diego.

This event was co-sponsored with the Film Studies Program. It was free and open to the public.

	Director/Producer Simonetta D'Italia-Wiener is a longtime educator with degrees in both law and art history, Unguarded represents the perfect intersection of Simonetta’s interests and talents. A professor at Brooklyn’s St Francis College, Simonetta’s previous, Oaxaca-set documentary, The Awakened Heart, won numerous awards, including a top prize at Mexico’s International Film Festival.
	T.J. Berden is a film producer at Big Sur Pictures. T.J. has developed, produced and distributed documentary and narrative films, including the award-winning Full of Grace (2016) via Cinedigm and Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018) starring Jim Caviezel. He served as a marketing and PR consultant on specialty films such as The Stoning of Soraya M., Waiting for “Superman," The Tree of Life, The Two Popes and A Hidden Life.
	Robert Ehnow, Ph.D. Robert is currently the Director for the Office for Life, Peace and Justice at the Catholic Diocese of San Diego.  He holds a PhD in Leadership Studies and Non-profit Management from the University of San Diego (2018).  Robert’s dissertation research centered on restorative justice theory and practice, prisoner re-entry and reintegration, and formerly incarcerated adults in higher education.  He is an adjunct faculty member at San Diego State University’s School of Public Affairs and at Santa Clara University’s College of Arts and Sciences.  He is an informed practitioner and researcher with a unique perspective as a former small business owner, retired military officer, formerly incarcerated citizen, and community leader.
