The Joan and Bill Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage was pleased to announce our Faculty Reading Group for the Spring 2017 semester. The Spring 2017 reading group was dedicated to Japanese author, Shūsaku Endō's novel Silence. Published in 1966 and in translated into English in 1969, the novel tells the story of a Jesuit missionary of the 17th century who endures persecution in the time of the "hidden Christians." Endo, a Japanese Catholic, explores the theme of a silent God in the midst of adversity. Martin Scorsese read the novel in 1989 and his film was just released. The story brings to light the horrific persecution of Christians under the Japanese shogunates of 17th century Japan. Told through the perspective of a Jesuit priest, it follows his struggle between martyrdom and apostasy. The Hank Center has decided to make Silence our Faculty Reading Group selection this semester.
