2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council of the Roman Catholic Church. The decisions made and documents approved over the four years of Vatican II profoundly altered the Roman Catholic Church, making it the most significant church event of the 20th century.
For those living after the Council, Roman Catholic life and thought changed dramatically, from the language and structure of the Sunday liturgy, to greater attention on Scripture, from increased lay involvement in the Church, to a new understanding of the Church itself.
To note the 50th anniversary, Loyola University Chicago’s Joan and Bill Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage will present a day-long colloquium where prominent scholars will present and discuss the living legacy of Vatican II, addressing topics such as ecclesiology, women in the Church, Scripture, and current Council historiography.
