Melissa Parra-Ramirez (AA ’24)
My name is Melissa Parra-Ramirez (AA ’24). I'm here to tell you about my Arrupe College experience.
- Major: AA in Social and Behavioral Sciences, Psychology
- High School: Rickover Naval Academy
- Involvements: Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, ACUNI Peer Educator, Student Worker at Office of Student Services, and Dancing Club Committee
How I chose my degree:
Knowing that I wanted my degree to fit with my desired career path—becoming a police officer—helped me make my decision. Psychology can be more effectively utilized as a skill, in my opinion. I was aware that working as police officers would involve interacting with a wide range of people. As a result, psychology has caused me to consider various methods of approaching conversation and how to interpret people's actions. Psychology has made it easier for me to realize that no two people have the same upbringing and that because of this, we all act differently, which will benefit me in the long run in my career!
My plans after graduation:
After several acceptances with scholarships, I am pleased to say that I'll be continuing at Loyola University Chicago with a full ride to earn my bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice.
Professor a new student should absolutely take a class with:
Ethics with Professor Minerva Ahumada! Definitely one of many of my favorite professors at Arrupe! She is very knowledgeable and passionate about philosophy. She is motivated to help others understand the concept of her courses. Besides being a create professor she is a beautiful person inside and out! very understanding and willing to always help!
Class I never expected to love:
Theology with Professor Alexis Baker. This class will always be one of my favorite classes. We were able to explore many concepts about different cultures belief. This course also made me wonder more about my beliefs and explore more about my catholic roots! Besides that, class itself, the professor was always so passionate about the lectures, which made me love it even more!
Favorite spot on campus:
The library at Loyola is going to be my favorite spot! I feel like I can get all of my thoughts out in this peaceful place. As a student, the library provides me with all I need, including books, computers, and even the printing machine! Definitely my fave location!
What was your favorite moment during your time at Loyola?
One of my many favorite memories from Loyola is my time spent working as a student employee! Working as a student has given me a lot of opportunities that I will never take for granted. It has been an amazing experience to be able to establish a completely new level of connection with the staff and students.
Some surprisingly cool things about Arrupe:
Arrupe offers an incredible community and an abundance of resources. Being able to peek behind the scenes at a lot of the functions and events we throw allows me to witness the love that goes into everything.
What advice do you have for the incoming class?
Advice that I have for incoming students is to take advantage of the resources and events that Arrupe has. You need help with math? Go to the Math Fellows, is free! You need help with writing? Go to the Writing Fellows, it's also free!
