Special Collections

Overview

Established in 1980, the Loyola Special Collections serves as an educational resource for the Loyola community and beyond by providing unique collections in the areas of Chicago history, Catholic history, 20th century American business, satire & caricature, Edward Gorey, Jesuit educators, politics, entertainment, and Loyola alumni, faculty, and staff, among others. Collections sometimes cover multiple collecting areas.

History of the Collection

The earliest established special collections at Loyola are in the areas of 20th century American business, politics, and Catholic history. These include the Dorr E. Felt colleciton, the Samuel Insull papers, the Halstead collection, and the Catholic Church Extension Society records. From this foundation, Loyola's Special Collections has grown to include collections on Chicago history, entertainment history, 19th century British political and social satire, faculty papers, alumni papers, and the papers of two United States Congressmen.

Collecting Areas

20th century American business

This collecting area includes the papers of Samuel Insull, the papers of people who worked for Insull, and the records of some of Insull's companies; the Dorr E. Felt collection; the papers of the Cuneo Family and records of their businesses; and papers of Loyola faculty members from the Quinlan School of Business, such as Dr. George Kaufmann.

Chicago History

This collecting area includes the records of Chicago businesses; organizations; educators; the papers of individuals and families from Chicago; the Irish Immigrants to Chicago oral history collection; the Latinos in Chicago oral history collection; and the Chicago educators oral history collection.

Catholic History

This collecting area includes the records of the Catholic Church Extension Society; SERRA International; the Robert Broderick papers; CISCA collection; and Holy Family Parish records.

Politics

This collecting area includes the Halstead Collection; the Scott Stantis papers; the papers of Dan Rostenkowski and Henry J. Hyde; and the Cook County Retired Judges Oral History collection.

Satire & Caricature

This collecting area includes the Michalak Collection, a collection of 19th century British social and political satirical broadsides.

Jesuit Educators

This collecting area contains the papers of Jesuit educators with a connection to Loyola University Chicago such as Richard McCormick, S.J. and Felix Biestek, S.J.

Entertainment

This collecting area includes the Stage Bill collection; Anderson Playbill collection; Autograph Collection; Jack Mulqueen papers; and the Sheet Music Collection.

Philosophy

This collecting area includes the Heidegger collection.

Loyola Faculty

This collecting area includes the papers of faculty members from the Colleges and Schools at Loyola. Among the collections are the papers of Francis L. Filas, S.J.; Francis X. Grollig, S.J.; Raymond V. Schoder, S.J.; Suzanne S. Gossett; Imogene King; and Catherine Jarrott.

Loyola Alumni

This collecting area includes the papers of alumni from the Colleges and Schools of Loyola. Among the collections are the papers of Helmuth Fuchs; George Drury; Arthur Kellner; Anna Grace McHenry-McGrath; and Edward Kelly.

Loyola Staff

This collection area includes the papers of staff members such as Alvo E. Albini; Thomas J. Dyba; and Thomas J. Bryant, S.J.
